In Pasa Pnoi, I have incorporated the first refrain of a Byzantine hymn from the Orthros service, which generally precedes the Greek Orthodox Liturgy. This particular version of the hymn is in the second plagal mode, one of the eight modes used in Byzantine music.

This piece is dedicated to my father, who sings in this recording. Special thanks to the MacDowell Colony, where work on this piece began.

Pasa pnoi enesato ton Kyrion.
Eneete ton Kyrion ek ton ooranon;
Eneete afton en tees ypseestees.
See prepee ymnos to Theo.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise him in the heights.
To you, O God, is due praise.
